Calathea Makoyana Interview

The Calathea Makoyana is native to tropical environments in South America, so it is used to average temperatures (between 13°C and 25°C). It should not be placed in full sun, but can tolerate slightly darker spaces.

How do I care for my calathea?

Alocasias do not need to be pruned, you must cleanly cut off the old leaves which turn yellow at their base.

How do I water my calathea?

It is ideal for Calathea to keep the soil moist, however you can let it dry on the surface and over a few centimeters. This corresponds to one to two waterings per week. You can add liquid fertilizer to your water every two weeks.

It is recommended to spray the Calathea several times a week, or even daily, in order to clean their leaves and repel insects and spiders. If one of the oldest leaves dries up or turns yellow don't worry, it happens. You can cut it at the base.

When should I repot my calathea?

The Calathea Makoyana does not need any specific soil, you can use soil for indoor green plants. So when the oldest leaves turn yellow, your plant no longer grows or when its roots come out of the bottom of the pot, you can repot your Calathea. To do this, take a pot with a diameter two or three centimeters larger and transfer your plant! Do not forget to scrape the soil at the root level so that it is replaced by your new soil.

How do I take cuttings for my calathea?

Calathea cannot be taken from cuttings, however you can divide it when repotting.

Frequent problems

-> Yellow leaves.

Yellow leaves can be caused by many factors, however the most common cause is overwatering, unless you tend to forget to water your plant. It can also be natural, your plant separating from its old leaves. You can then repot it.

-> Leaves curl or turn brown.

Be sure to water when the topsoil dries out. Also remember to place your Calathea in an environment that is not too dry.
