How do I water my calathea?

It is best to water the Calathea when the surface of the pot begins to dry out. You can also water it in small doses regularly and keep the soil cool.These tropical plants do not like calcareous water, it is generally advisable to use distilled water or rainwater at room temperature to spray or hose them down. Tap water will not kill them but may cause a browning of the leaves on their ends. You can use liquid houseplant fertilizer, rich in trace elements in small doses from April to October .

When should I repot my calathea?

You can repot your Calathea if its roots are coming out well from the bottom of the pot, if they are starting to show through the top or if they are thick and tangled. You can use potting soil for green plants, and possibly lighten it a little with perlite.

How do I take cuttings from my calathea?

Calathea are rhizomatic plants, and therefore cannot be propagated. to use a knife to separate the plants.

Frequent problems

Leaves turn yellow, leaf tips are yellow.

If your Calathea simply won't separate from its older, smaller leaves, this is likely caused by excess water. Space your waterings a day or two apart and be careful not to let the bottom of the pot soak in water.

The leaves curl up on themselves. The tips of the leaves are brown.

This can be caused by too dry air or insufficient or irregular watering. To remedy this you can for example place your Calathea in a bathroom, or group it with other plants.
