The opuntia or racket cactus is part of the cactus family. It can be grown indoors or outdoors but in a warm/temperate environment. Be careful, not all Opuntias have "two ears", some can have three. Attention, although cute, it stings strongly! Handle with care therefore. Some varieties of opuntia produce edible fruit, prickly pears (opuntia ficus indica) but this variety will produce pretty yellow flowers if you give it a prominent place in the sun.
How do I care for my opuntia?
Bright and sunny location is recommended.
How do I water my opuntia?
The Opuntia does not need to be watered a lot, let the soil dry out completely before watering again. In summer and spring favor 1 watering per month and in winter and autumn watering every 2-3 months only. Do not spray its foliage.
When should I repot my opuntia?
You can repot your Opuntia approximately every three years, in the spring in a terracotta pot, preferably deep.
Use the following mixture: 50% potting soil / 50% sand or a special potting soil for cacti and succulents.
How do I take cuttings from my opuntia?
In the spring, you can take opuntia cuttings using two different techniques, either by sowing after soaking the seeds overnight or by cutting rockets (they come off easily, but wear gloves) making sure to let the rocket dry once fortnight in the open air and in the sun before repotting it in the mixture of sand and compost.
Frequent problems
