Monstera Deliciosa Maintenance

How do I care for my monstera?

Clean the leaves once a week with a damp cloth.
Prune yellow or damaged leaves with pruning shears at their base.

How do I water my monstera?

Water when the soil is completely or almost completely dry, about twice a week for mini plants, every 7 to 15 days for diameters above 12cm. Several watering methods possible: shower, bath, watering can at room temperature.
You can also spray your plant, but beware of excess spray that can cause black spots.

When should I repot my monstera?

You can use soil for green plants or make an airy and loosely compacted soil, with for example a mixture of soil, pine bark, perlite. Every two or three years when the roots come out of the pot. The Monstera likes to have its roots "tight", but not repotting it will stunt its growth.

How do I take cuttings from my monstera?

Cut the stem using pruning shears at the base of a leaf, including the node. Immerse the knot in a vase with clear water or put it in the ground and water it. Roots will grow in just a few weeks!

Common problems

  • Yellow leaves.
    • Often caused by overwatering! Let the potting soil dry thoroughly before rewatering and your Monstera will fare better.
    • The cause can also be natural. As your plant grows it will separate from its oldest leaves, prune them when they droop and watch your plant continue to grow.
  • Rolled or drooping leaves, brown or orange leaves.
    • As with many other varieties, this is often a sign of a lack of watering or humidity. Let your plant soak until the leaves are firm again. Some may not recover, so prune them, that's okay!
  • Black or spotted leaves.
    • This problem is often caused by overwatering or scorching, do not place your Monsteras in full sun!
  • Leaves remain full and do not split.
    • No worries, your plant is still young. Fertilize it in good weather, and give it good exposure, a lack of light can cause this!
